Api of crude oil
What Are The Crude Oil Classification? API classifies crude oil into 4 categories depending on their API Gravity range: Light – API > 31.1. Medium – API between 22.3 and 31.1. Heavy – API between 10 and 22.3. Extra Heavy – API < 10.0 (heavier than water) The API of crude oils varies typically between 10 and 50, with most crude oils falling in the range of 20-45. Using API gravity, the conventional crude oils can be generally considered as light (°API>30), medium (30>°API>22), and heavy (°API<22). API gravity moves inversely to density, which means the denser an oil is, the lower its API gravity will be. An API of 10 is equivalent to water, which means any oil with an API above 10 will float on water while any with an API below 10 will sink. Light – Light crude oil has an API gravity of 31.1 °API or higher. Medium – Medium crude oil has an API gravity that ranges between 22.3 °API and 31.1 °API. Heavy – Heavy crude oil has an API gravity that ranges between 22.2 °API and 10 °API.

It is obtained by the following Unlike traditional crude oils, bitumen is heavier than water that, by definition, has an API gravity equal to 10 (see Figure). Mechanical impurities Generally speaking, oil with an API gravity between 40 and 45° commands the highest prices. Above 45°, the molecular chains become shorter and less valuable to refineries. Crude oil is classified as light, medium, or heavy according to its measured API gravity. Light crude oil has an API gravity higher than 31.1° (i.e., less than 870 kg/m 3) After decades of decline, crude oil production in the United States has recently been increasing rapidly. Horizontal drilling and multistage hydraulic fracturing are now utilized to access oil and natural gas resources from shale rock formations that were previously either technically impossible or uneconomic to produce.
Crude's classification as either “light” or “heavy” depends on the oil’s relative density, based on the American Petroleum Institute (API) Gravity. This measurement reflects how light or heavy a crude oil is compared to water. If an oil’s API Gravity is greater than 10, it is lighter than water and will float on it.
If you have the crude density given in °API, use the API-to-gravity converter. See also similar correlations for lubricating oil, fuel oils and jet fuel. Volume correction factors can be used to calculate the volume of a crude at base temperature (15°C/59°F) if you know the density and volume at another temperature.

API Gravity is the oil industry standard used to determine and classify the density of how many barrels of crude can be extracted from a metric ton of a given oil.
