This time around I'm doing a stock 4.8L Single turbo build. Im keeping this a budget friendly build. So wanna leave the stock bottom end, toss a cam/supporting parts in it and probably just a LS1 or 2 intake maybe an LS6 if I find a decent deal, possible 243 heads and head studs. So the motor I picked up is a 120K mile 2001 4.8L. The graph below is a bone stock LQ4 bottom end with ARP rod bolts and a Melling oil pump. The heads are factory untouched 317's with the exception of Lunati dual springs and retainers and Ferrea stainless valves. The cam is a custom piece spec'd by FlowTech Induction/Ed Curtis. I realize it was a short term build, but 1200 hp out of a stock bottom end junkyard motor is stupid. 60 dyno pulls is still a good amount too. As they mention at the end, might even be able to get some miles on it at just the 700-800 level. A weak spot in a hopped up LS engine is the stock rod bolt strength. Considering the RPM range we plan to spin this motor (7,100-7,200), a set of ARP bolts are the way to go. There is an internet debate about using a stock “cracked cap” style rod with aftermarket bolts and that it can cause clearance issue, but we encountered no such problems.
